What is Oakland County lake real estate like? If you are moving to Southeastern Michigan you may be wondering what kind of lake home you may find. There are a wide variety of home styles and ages on Oakland County Lakes. I'm going to give you an idea of all the Oakland County Lake real estate and home styles.
There are many old 1920's -1950's ranch homes that range in size from 600 square feet up to 1100 square feet. You will find more of them on the smaller, more remote lakes.
Some of these old cottages have been updated. Some haven't. Remember back then they didn't have building codes or building inspectors. So if you buy an old cottage be sure to hire a good home inspector. On the more upscale lakes you won't find many of the old cottages left because they have been torn down to make room for newer, bigger homes.
It's not usually for those old cottages to have sloping floors, little insulation, and old windows. They weren't big lake homes so some of the lake lots have 35' - 40' of lake frontage. Some of the attics were converted bedrooms making them bungalows. Most of them never had garages.

Oakland County MI Lake real estate
Over the next fifty years the little ranch homes were added on to. Up and out! Bigger kitchens, larger bedrooms, and garages were built.
Then in the early 1960's the new Oakland County lake real estate home styles changed. They were bigger brick ranches, split levels, and colonials.
The average size Oakland County lake home was now 1000 - 2000 square feet. If they were being built in a subdivision they were being built on the lakes. Lake homes were now year round homes.
Those lake homes had basements now, formal living rooms, formal dining rooms, 3+ bedrooms, 1+ bathrooms, and 2 car attached garages. This went on until the lates 1980's when home styles changed again.
There were even contemporary homes built!
After 1985 Oakland County real estate changed again. Old homes were torn down. If the lake lot had good lake frontage they were torn down. They even built shot gun style homes. If the lot was fifty foot wide then the home was long and narrow.
Bigger colonial homes were being built. The homes were built with large master bedrooms, walk in closets, open layouts, and entertainment style kitchens.
Of course since the 1960's big lake luxury estates were built. They had all the best amenities. Fancy light and plumbing fixtures. Lots of window and square footage over 4000 square feet.
A-frame houses and log houses are very rare.
