Public Lakes in West Bloomfield Michigan

There are four public lakes in West Bloomfield Township.  There are about 19 private lakes in the township.  Two of these public lakes have Michigan DNR public boat launch sites.  Middle Straits Lake is a township park that the public can launch a boat at.

Cass Lake

Cass Lake is the largest lake in Oakland County at 1280 acres.  The average depth of the lake is 26 feet and its deepest point reaching 123 feet.  It is a highly desirable lake because of it's size and because it lies in West Bloomfield. Cass Lake is a great choice for those seeking a waterfront property in Michigan because it is surrounded by so many cities in Oakland County.  These Michigan cities include Waterford Township, West Bloomfield Orchard Lake Village, and Keego Harbour.  These waterfront properties sit on a public access lake that allows all sports vehicles.  Cass Lake is a fun place for waterfront living in Michigan because it does have sherriff patrols.

Cass Lake lies in West Bloomfield, Waterford, and Keego Harbor.  So depending on where you live where your children go.  Cass Lake is Oakland County's largest lake at 1280 acres.  It is a public lake.  Because the lake is so large and near a metropolitian area the lake is very busy on the weekend.  Cass Lake is what I would call a high end lake.  It has many luxury waterfront estates on the lake that range over 6 million dollars and some of these waterfront estates have over 10,000 square feet of living space. 

Of course you will find many smaller homes on the lake too.  If these smaller homes have large lots many times they will be torn down to have bigger homes with the latest amenities built on them.  There are still some 1000 square foot homes on the lake.  Cass Lake does have a few canals too so you may be able to find a Cass Lake canal front home that is lower in price and lower in taxes but still gives you the full access of the lake.

Middle Straits Lake

Middle Straits Lake in West Bloomfield, Michigan is a large lake that values both fun and comfort for its waterfront residents.  At 172 acres and with a maximum depth of 51 feet, Middle Straits Lake is an all-sports lake.  However, there are rules to keep things more calm and quiet on Sundays and holidays for these Michigan waterfront residents.  Middle Straits Lake is semi-private, meaning there is a ramp and small parking lot for visitors, but the beach areas are private to the waterfront homeowners only.  With a safe and enjoyable atmosphere, including a park and picnic area, Middle Straits Lake is a great place for waterfront living in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Middle Straits Lake is close to the M-5 connector that gets you to I-275 and I-696 expressways.  There are very few lakes that have easy access and have great schools too.  Those two reasons make Middle Straits Lake a highly desirable lake for many lakefront home buyers.  Middle Straits Lake does have a small public access ramp in a city park. The children on the lake go either to Walled Lake Schools or  West Bloomfield Schools.

Union Lake

Union Lake is a lake in West Bloomfied, Michigan, with large, well-kept waterfront homes.  Union Lake is definitely considered to be one of Michigan’s nicest communities, though it is not private.  Still, with 465 acres and spacious waterfront properties, privacy and convenience can still be found on Union Lake.  The lake has a maximum depth of 110 feet and its large size makes it great for all sports activities.  Union Lake itself has a lot to offer, and so do these high-end waterfront properties, in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

There is a small part of Union Lake that is in Commerce MI.  It is a public all sports lake with a public access on Union Lake Rd.  Union Lake still has some of the old lake cottages around, but it is slowing becoming a very high end lake.  You will find homes ranging from $600,000 to over a million dollars on the lake (2013)  However you will still see small ranches and split level homes on there too.

It is a good size lake that is great for all the water sports you want.  It must be a very good fishing lake because I always see a lot of ice fishermen in the winter and quite a few small fishing boats being put in early in the morning.

These three public lakes are some of the biggest lakes in West Bloomfield too. The state has provided the public access to some of Michigan's lakes.  Usually the lake residents do not like a public launch site because it allows too many non residents access to the lake.

We too believe that public lakes are busier.  Sure the state limits the number of parking spots, but the issue is that people come and go all day.  So the lot is full all day but way more people have used the lake than just the number of parking spots.  A private lake will be quieter, but remember if there is a marina on the lake it may add more boaters to the lake than a public launch would.
