Lake homes on Tan Lake are going to be more like normal homes that you see in any city or subdivision. There are no tiny cottages that you see on many of the lakes in Oakland County. There are no little 600 or 700 square foot one and two bedrooms with one bath that were built in the 1920's or 1930. Many of the waterfront homes on Tan Lake will have all the normal things you see in most subdivisions. Most will have garages, brick, stone, or vinyl exteriors, and basements. Some of the homes are on bigger lots. You can find just about any size, or style of home on the lake. There are no mega mansion luxury lake estates on the lake. You won't find 7000 or 8000 square foot luxury lake homes on the Stringy Lake chain.
Because there are no little homes, and most of them are well cared for they look like a subdivision. No junk laying around the homes. It is a well kept neighborhood in most cases. Sometimes lake home buyers do not lakes that are a mish mash of lake houses, that are close together, and have junk on the outside. Tan Lake homes are not like that at all.
Tan Lake is part of the Stringy Lake Chain. Tan Lake and Long Lake are connected as far as I can tell from the maps. You cannot tell where one lake starts and the other lake ends. It is the same way with Clear Lake and Squaw Lake. They look like they are one and the same lake. The Stringy Lake chain is only 164 acres in total size. Most of the lakes are under 35 acres. Even together Tan Lake and Long Lake do not add up to a large lake. I would say that all the lakes in the chain are good for occassional water skiing or tubing. I do not think a person who wants a big lake or wants to do a lot of water sports would want to stay on Tan Lake or any lake in the Stringy Chain of Lakes.
The Stringy Lake chain is part of the Clinton River watershed. It is fed by Paint Creek to the north and it flows out of the chain on the south side of spring lake.
Here are the sizes of the other lakes in the area.
Tan Lake is about a mile west of downtown Oxford. It lies south of Seymour Lake Road and east of M-24. If you follow M-24 south you can jump on I-75 expressway in about 10 -15 minutes. If you head north on M-24 you will hit the town of Lapeer and I-69.
I moved onto a lake (White Lake in Oakland County) about ten years ago. I love lake living and every client I have helped move onto a lake in the last 15 years tell me how much their life has changed for the better and how much they love living on a lake. Some of them have told me that they wished they had done it sooner. Living on a lake is a great way of life. Let's hope we can find the right lake and right lake home for you.
