Are looking for a lake home in Oakland County and wondering what about lakes in Oxford Michigan are like? What I have to tell you first of all so you do not waste time is that there are no huge all sports lakes near Oxford MI.  The closest big all sports lakes will be either Lakeville Lake or Lake Orion

Here is a list of Oxford area lakes

I bet you did not know that the Oxford area was once known as ‘The Gravel Capital of the World’. I did not know that.  It was shipping over 5 million tons of gravel a year in it's heyday.  Hundreds of people where employed digging and shipping the gravel out.  Quite a few of the lakes in Oxford are old gravel pits.  They dug sand and gravel out of the ground and at some point they would dig deep enough and hit an underground spring that would flood the area they were digging in.  After they stopped digging many of these gravel pit lakes sat undeveloped for years.

Metro Detroit's population did not expand out towards Oxford until later years.   Then local developers realized the potential value of these lakes.  They then started building beautiful planned subdivisions around the lakes.  They have developed these old gravel pits and built big brick homes. There are more lakes in the area because of the gravel mining.  Many of the lakes around Oxford are smaller old gravel pit lakes.  Oxford sits on a huge gravel vein left by the glaciers. Mining began in 1911 and by the 1950’s there were five companies mining here.

Many of the lakes near Oxford are electric motor only lakes because they are so small.  They just are not big enough for active water sports enthusiasts.  Many of the little lakes are not big enough even to put a speed boat on.   Some of the positive things about Oxford area lakes are mostly sandy bottom lakes because they are old gravel pits.  The water is usually clear because the lakes are spring fed and deep.  These lakes are great for swimming, and paddling around.  Some of the lakes in the Oxford area were created by glaciers and not man made lakes.                                                Glass Lake homes Oxford MI

It has made the Oxford Lakes more desirable when they developed subdivisions around the lake.  It was one of the best things they did in the last twenty to thirty years.  The lake homes are newer built brick colonials, cape cods, and ranches.  They range in size from 2000 square feet to over 3500 square feet.  They have two and three car garages, soaring ceilings, open layouts, big master bedroom suites with walk in closets and basements.  Some of the basements are walkout or daylight basements.

Of course on some of the non man made lakes in Oxford Michigan you will find small older cottages and of course there are homes of all sizes, agents, and styles on these older natural lakes.   Some of these lakes were carved out by glaciers millions of years ago. You will find about any type of home you want on Oxford area lakes.

Like I commented earlier in this article many of Oxford area lakes that many of them are smaller in size.  There are no big all sports lakes over 200 acres in Oxford Michigan.  The closest big lake is going to be Lake Orion or Lakeville Lake.  However if consider the Stringy Chain of Lakes is an all sports lake and they add up to a good sized lake.

Whatever smaller lake your are looking for in Oxford or whatever type of home you are looking for you can find it. Some people will not like them because they want an all sports lake but the draw of water is strong for many buyers.  There are many reasons why people love water.  Sometimes it reminds them of happy times on vacation.  Some just love the calming effect and peace they get from being on the water.
