1.) Mixed bag lakes
What is mean by that is the type of homes on the lake. What we call a mixed bag lake is a lake where you are going to find all styles and types of lake houses. One house may be an old 800 square foot lake cottage from the 1920’s and next door is a big colonial home that is 3000 square foot built in 2000. Next door to that is a 1500 bungalow built in the 1960’s. On a mixed bag lake you will find homes of all ages, sizes, and styles. An example of a mixed bag lake would be Williams Lake in Waterford or Upper Pettibone Lake in Highland MI.

A subdivision lake will be a lake that was usually built from the 1960’s on and has similar style homes. For example you are most like going to find brick homes with attached garages. These homes are not going to be exactly alike or look like row houses. There still may be ranches, split level homes, and colonials but there are not going to be any little small lake cottages or unique homes. Most of the homes in what we call a subdivision lake will be built in the same time period. A couple of examples of subdivision lakes are. A couple of examples of subdivision lakes is Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township and Tull Lake in White Lake Township.
Some lakes around Metro Detroit have a section that is a subdivision style and another side that is a mixed bag homes.

Crooked Lake is an all sports lake that connect to Pickerel. There is no public access on the lake, though there is lake access on pickerel. You can take a small boat from Pickerel to Crooked Lake. It also connects to Tamarack Lake.
State DNR maps say it is 58 acres though another internet source says 74 acres.
The kids that live on the lake would go to Chelsea Schools.

There have been no homes sold between January & November 2012 on the lake.
Crooked Lakefront homes are bigger homes in wooded areas that make you feel as if you are up north. Pinckney State Recreation area is around part of the lake.
Only about 1/2 the lake is privately owned. The one private street that is on the lake is Glenbrook. So there are very few homes on the lake. In fact our MLS is not showing any homes that have sold recently.
Some of the Crooked Lake properties have 1 - 12 acres. We think lakes in and around the Pinckney State Recreation are great for three reasons.
- Usually the state land covers about 1/2 the lake making it more secluded
- There is fewer homes on the lake because of all the state land
- Fewer homes means fewer boats on the lake
- Usually there is more privacy and more acreage on the lake properties.
- There is more of an "up north" feeling because of the rural setting/natural settings. More trees and much of the lake is natural.
So what are the best lakes? If you ask that to any lake home owner they are going to say their lake. Like living in a city. Everybody thinks theirs is the best. It is the same way with lakes. So what are the best lakes?
It depends on what you want to do. You may want to slalom ski every morning. Then a Michigan lake with a ski course is the best lake for you. You may get bored on one lake so the Portage chain of Lakes or the Half Moon chain of lakes is better suited for you.
The best lake is the lake the fits your needs. Most lakes in the area now have weed control. Most have the same water quality. Some areas are ahead in getting sewers around them. Most lakes now are fairly stable in the lake levels. They are controlled by dams or many lakes have augmentation wells to keep the lake levels at a stable level.
So what is the best lake? It depends on your needs. We will usually be able to give you a list of big all sports lakes? Or list of non motorized lakes? Or lakes in West Bloomfield? Or nice kayak lakes? Or maybe you want lakes with an up-north feel.
