If you are looking for a lake house for sale in Oakland County or a waterfront home in Wayne, Genessee, or Livingston County you have come to the right place. Metro Detroit has several great "lakes areas" where you are sure to find a beautiful lake home near Detroit. One of the first questions we ask my lake home buyers is "What do you plan to do on the lake". Every home buyer is different. You may be retiring and looking for a quiet lake where you can fish or kayak on. Or you may be a person that just wants to go out on the pontoon boat. Some people don't even care about going out on the lake. They just like the calming effect of water. They are content just to look at the lake. If you are young, athletic, or very active you may want an SE Michigan all sports lake where you can ride jet skis, take people tubing, skiing, surfing, or wake boarding. If you are a grand parent you may want a quieter lake but yet a lake that you can be active with the grand kids. Or you may want a lake front property that has a sandy bottom so you can swim right out front.

You may want a sail boat lake, or a electric motor only lake. You may want a lakefront home on an Oakland County lake that connects to other lakes or has a river run through it. There are over 321 named lakes in Oakland County alone. You may want an active lake where there are gathering spots on the lake for local lake residents. Maybe you want a private lake, or a lake that isn't fully developed. So many choices when it comes to finding a lake home in SE Michigan.
Lakefront homes in Oakland County and in SE Michigan are a mixed bag. What you have to realize up front that these lakes were once weekend get aways for Detroiters in the early 1900's. There were small cabins and homes on the lake that were representative of the times. They were not glamorous. They were more functional. 7' and 8' ceilings. No open layouts. Simple homes with smaller rooms. In the beginning many of the lake cottages were 600 to 1000 square foot ranches, many without basements. Many had 2 bedrooms, and a tiny bathroom.

Of course over the years lake homes in Oakland County have changed with the building trends. In the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's you saw brick colonials, split level homes, and larger ranches built. Now you see bigger brick colonial and contemporary lakefront homes that have all the latest amenities. Amenities such as master bedroom suites, soaring great rooms, walkout basements, entertainment style kitchens, and open layouts. So from yesteryears waterfront homes in Oakland County and Livingston County have changed dramatically.

We still have many "mixed bag lakes" where there are old small cottages next to a newer brick colonial. However we do have some lakes that were planned communities that were built in the 1960's and 1970's. Lakes like Tull Lake in White Lake Township, Dunham Lake in Highland, or Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township. Then you have other lakes like Loon Lake in Waterford, Lake Voorheis in Orion, or Duck Lake in Highland were you have a section of the lake or a street on the lake of newer brick colonials. The other sides of these lakes may have older smaller cottages and homes on them, but they do have a section of brick homes that are similar.

It is a little more difficult to buy a lake home in Metro Detroit. What I mean by that is there are a lot more variables when purchasing a home on a lake. You have to take into account the type of lake, the size of the lake, public or private, type of lake bottom in front of the house, amount of parking, the neighborhood, well & septic. There are just a few more considerations to think about. That is what I am for. I'm an experienced lakefront Realtor that really knows the lakes. We can tell more about the lakes than many Realtors. It's about saving you time and keeping you from buying on the wrong lake. We can tell you stories of buyers that have come to me after that bought on a lake only to realize the lake really wasn't for them or their lifestyle. That is why we ask questions so we can point you to lakes and lakefront homes in Oakland County or any of the surrounding counties that would fit you.
