Whalen Lake is a small private natural lake with gravel roads and woods around it. There is a Salem National Ev. Lutheran Church
camp ground (22 acres) on the lake providing that up north feeling. High-speed boating and water skiing prohibited on the lake.  (Also towing anybody behind the boat on a tube, wakeboard, and kneeboard is prohibited).

You get that up north feeling with the gravel roads and all the woods.

Whalen Lake Hartland Michigan was named after John Whalen who moved to Hartland in 1835 from the northern part of Ohio.  He was a surveyor of much repute, and made many surveys of lands in Livingston County. He died on June 20, 1851. Whalen Lake was home to the Potowanamie Indians 100 years ago.

The children that live on the lake go to Hartland Schools.

Whalen Lakefront homes.  Most Whalen Lake homes were built after 1985.  They range in size from 2300 square feet to about 4700 square feet.  Most of the homes have 3 car garages.

If you are looking for a small Livingston County Lake with lots of room then this may be the lake for you.  The lakefront lot sizes range from 2 acres to about 12 acres.  There are newer large homes on the lake. Whalen Lake homes are primarily ranches and contemporary homes.

 In the last 3 years (from 10/12) the least expensive Whalen Lakefront home was a 1989 built, 2390 square foot home, 2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, ranch style home with 200' of lake frontage that sold for $335,000.

The most expensive waterfront home (during the same period) was a 1997 built, 3032 square foot, 5 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath contemporary home with 135' lake frontage that sold for $379,000.

In some city subdivisions there is the keep up with the Joneses mentality.   Wish we could say that keeping up with the Joneses does not apply on the lakes. It does unfortunately with some of the lake home owners when it comes to boats and toys.  Who has the fastest Jet Ski, or the most expensive boat?  The keeping up with the Joneses does not apply to much to homes.  It is more about the toys.

We guess we would say that the boats and toys are more important the lake house sometimes.  Landscaping on most lake home is simpler.  You are not going to have three level of shrubs or $100,000 front landscaping.  Lake home owners are more about enjoying the lake than taking care of the yard.  Some lake home have little or no landscaping.

What is different about most lake home owners is that they are individualist.  They are not into keeping up with the Joneses.  Part of it that lake homes are not similar.  They vary so much.  So one lady is not going to be able to decorate the same way in her 1500 square foot remodeled cottage as her neighbor in the rebuilt colonial that is 2400 square feet.  Different layouts and different styles.  No keeping up with the Jones.

Many lake homes have beautiful interiors that are well kept and well maintained.  The prestige of lake living is just that.  You get to wake up each morning to the lake.  You get to come home to the lake each night.  You are able to sit on your patio, or take a ride around the lake when you want to.  That is best part of lake live.
